On a stormy night, a woman dreams of a pregnant cat and cannot fall back asleep. Something compels her to read about the biography of Christina the Astonishing, a 13th century saint known for nourishing herself with milk from her own breasts. Throughout the night, as she reads, strange phenomena unfold. Filmed between friends and around my own neighbourhood, the film is framed by a Mandorla "holy almond" which gives it its title. The shape, often used throughout the Middle Ages to encircle images of saints, is an evolution of an earlier icon for the divine, that of a slit, or vulva, from where the world was thought to originate.
